Used CNC Horizontal Milling Machines for sale

A CNC horizontal milling machine has the milling spindle in the horizontal plane as opposed to the more common CNC vertical milling machine that has the spindle in the vertical direction.  The horizontal orientation of the spindle allows for better chip removal because the machine doesn't have to fight against gravity to remove the chips.

There are several things to consider when deciding which CNC milling machine to purchase.  The CNC horizontal milling machine typically is equipped with rotary pallets that are capable of having rectangular blocks of steel mounted to them.  These square blocks are called Tombstones.  The work to be milled is commonly attached to the four sides of these blocks.  When the work on one side of the block is finished the block is rotated 90 degrees to present a fresh side and the operation continues.  This allows the machine to spend more time milling before the machine has to be stopped and the pallets changed.  The changing of the pallets on a CNC horizontal milling machine is accomplished with an automatic pallet changer.  This feature allows the operator to load up one of the pallets with work to be performed while the other pallet is being worked on by the machine - thus increasing the amount of time the machine is doing productive work.  Another desirable feature sometimes found on this type of CNC machine is the ability of the pallet is turn in unison with the other 3-axis of motion making it a full 4th axis contouring motion.  This ability greatly expands the type of work that the machine owner can accept.  Another distinct advantage of the CNC horizontal milling machine is the larger number of tool holders that can be loaded into the machine.  This allows the machine to run for longer periods of time unattended.  All of these features make the purchase of a used CNC horizontal milling machine a worthwhile investment for shops with larger work to be performed or greater volumes.
